9 Unexpected Pregnancy Symptoms in the First Trimester

Pregnancy is a beautiful and transformative journey but also a remarkable experience filled with the unexpected. While many mothers-to-be anticipate classic pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness and fatigue, the first trimester often brings a host of other, more random symptoms that can take you by surprise.

Whether this is your first pregnancy, and everything is entirely new, or you’ve been down this road before, you’ll soon realize that each pregnancy unfolds with its unique set of experiences and symptoms.

In this blog post, we’re going to explore nine of the most unexpected and, at times, downright quirky first-trimester pregnancy symptoms. So, let’s embark on this adventure together, embracing the beauty of the unexpected.

1. Sensitive Teeth and Canker Sores

In the early days of my first trimester, well before I even realized I was expecting, a peculiar discomfort would greet me every time I spoke and the gentlest breath of air brushed against my mouth. It was a sensation I couldn’t ignore, almost like a shiver coursing through my teeth. As it turns out, I wasn’t alone in experiencing this phenomenon.

Many expectant mothers often grapple with sensitive teeth, along with another surprising dental woe – canker sores, early in their pregnancy journey. While these discomforts may catch you off guard, they are actually quite common in pregnancy. Therefore, it’s essential to give your oral health extra attention during this time. For me, this meant making a switch from my usual fluoride-free toothpaste to one with fluoride to help ease the discomfort.

2. Bleeding Gums

After my sensitive teeth and canker sores went away, I was greeted with another oral health issue. Many women experience bleeding gums while pregnant, thanks to the increase in hormones! I would some days wake up with a bloody mouth, and would be spitting up blood while I brushed my teeth. While it might seem unnerving, it’s essential to know that this is a common occurrence.

To manage this symptom, I discovered a gentle method to stimulate my gums using a toothpick. By pressing it gently against the gums and moving it in circular motions, I found that this simple practice helped strengthen my gums and alleviate some of the bleeding. Of course, maintaining regular dental check-ups and adhering to a diligent oral hygiene routine, including flossing, played a crucial role in ensuring my gums stayed healthy throughout my pregnancy journey.

3. Increased Sensitivity to Smells

While it might be the most common first-trimester symptom, along with nausea, of course, this one caught me off guard at the most unexpected moments. Even something as innocent as opening the fridge became an adventure in itself. For a few weeks, I found myself unable to face that once-familiar door, fearing that every item inside had mysteriously morphed into a bad smell.

The only way I could bear the smell of my own kitchen was with a mask on, covered in essential oils. And if those yucky kitchen smells are causing you nausea, sniffing a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol on it should help!

4. Congestion

Ever found yourself reaching for tissues with a case of the sniffles during pregnancy? It might not be a cold after all. The magic of pregnancy brings with it a curious guest – congested nasal passages.

Thanks to the increased blood flow that accompanies pregnancy, those mucous membranes decide to join the party, causing your nasal passages to swell. But don’t worry; there are some simple and natural remedies to help you find relief:
